Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Basic concepts of current economic theory and their application to economic history. Training of proficiency in activ and passiv English for Master students.
We will use a short and easily accessible text (P. Dasgupta, Economics. A very short introduction, Oxford 2007) as a guide to economic theory and will discuss the possibilities and problems in applying contemporary economic theory on the study of past societies and economies. You are recommended to provide yourself with a copy of Dasgupta's book in advance.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance; participation; short summaries and presentations.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Getting familiar with economic theory and its language (in English). Getting aware of the possibilites and problems of applying contemporary economic theory to the study of historical economic and social settings. Training of proficiency in activ and passiv English for Master students.

Examination topics

Guided readings, discussion, writing summaries and short presentations of texts (English is the only admitted language).

Basic text:
Partha Dasgupta, Economics. A very short introduction, Oxford University Press 2007.
(Participants should procure themselfs with a copy of this - very cheap - little book.)
For those who feel unsecure with English, there is a German translation under the titel "Die Weltwirtschaft" (Reclam)
