Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The research seminar will look at the role of print media for the foreign üpolicy making of the Habsburg monarchy in the second half of the 19th century. After a series of introductory sessions, in which pre-circulated papers will be used to discuss Austrian foreign policy also from a cultural studies perspective, the seminar will analyse the rich collection of press clippings at the Haus-Hof- und Staatsarchiv. This will allow us a profound discussion of the role of print media for foreign policy making and of the representation of the Habsburg Monarchy in foreign newspapers.

Participation in discussions; participation in one of the small research units built from the participants of the seminar; oral presentation; seminar paper
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The research seminar will further competences in the analysis of the foreign service as a bureaucratic institution; it will train participants in the use of quantitative and qualitative methods for the analysis of media coverage; we will discuss and use cultural studies methods for the analysis of representations of Austria.
Examination topics
Discussion of pre-circulated research literature; work in the archive with mostly printed source material; definition of small research groups for the analysis of the source material with different methodological approaches; presentation and discussion of the results; discussion of written reports.
