Aims, contents and method of the course

Die Oper, die Konzert- und Tanzmusik spielten eine wichtige Rolle im Gesellschaftsleben Zentraleuropas, hatten aber auch häufig eine politische Dimension. Die kulturhistorische Vorlesung behandelt die Geschichte Zentraleuropas von 1780 bis 1918 im Prisma der Musik. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Habsburgerreich, das aber nicht isoliert, sondern samt seinen kulturellen und vor allem musikalischen Beziehungen mit Deutschland, Polen und Italien betrachtet wird. Außerdem geht es um kulturellen Austausch, Mischungen und Abgrenzungsprozesse innerhalb des Habsburgerreiches mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Böhmen, Ungarn und Galizien. Auch die sich wandelnde Musikkultur der Hauptstadt Wien, die sich nur im Rahmen dieser Kontexte verstehen lässt, wird tief behandelt.
