Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This series of lectures deals with themes of modern or contemporary Irish history of interest to students of History and Anglistik. Following a description of the historical background, each lecture will look at a short story, a novel, memoirs and political texts. All lectures will be in the English language. Writers examined include Frank O’Connor, Aidan Higgins, Brian O’Nolan (Myles na Gopaleeen) and Frank McCourt, the politicians James Connolly and James Larkin, and the memoirists Ernie O’Malley, C.S. Andrews and George O’Brien.
Assessment and permitted materials
At the end of the semester and on three dates in the following semester students will sit a two-hour exam. They will answer questions based on any two of the lectures. They can answer either in German or in English.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of the lectures is to acquaint students with important themes or writers in Irish history.
