This course will help to learn more about the importance of encyclopaedias and other works of general knowledge for historical research.

Following an introduction in the history of European encyclopaedias various aspects of the European (re)presentation of Asia as mirrored in works of general knowledge will be discussed
-) the geography of Asia (regions, countries)
-) natural resources and economy
-) population
-) religions of Asia
-) language and literature
-) history of European presence in Asia
Based on these major subjects we will analyze the various strands of discourse on Asia and their development in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European encyclopaedias
