Aims, contents and method of the course

The representation of "Asia" as a whole and of the various regions of Asia underwent major changes during the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century. Encyclopaedias reflect some of these changes in a most rather manner.
Following an introduction in the history of European encyclopaedias various aspects of the European (re)presentation of Asia as mirrored in works of general knowledge will be discussed
-) the geography of Asia (regions, countries)
-) natural resources and economy
-) population
-) religions of Asia
-) language and literature
-) history of European presence in Asia
Based on these major subjects we will analyze the various strands of discourse on Asia and their development in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European encyclopaedias
