Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Since 1945, and especially since the 1980s, the public discussion of violent pasts has become a ubiquitous phenomenon in societies that go through regime changes. Historical commissions, restitution laws and trials against human rights violators have proliferated. This seminar presents six examples - three from Latin America and three from other continents - of how societies and/or the international community have discussed their own conflict-ridden pasts: Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, South Africa, former Yugoslavia and the USA. It pays credit to the fact that Latin American countries have played a crucial role in establishing certain tools of history politics. Students are taught to weigh global against local factors when it comes to examining the construction of collective memory. The differences and common features of politics of history in Latin America will become particularly clear when juxtaposed to examples from Europe, Africa, and the USA. At the same time, students will see how their choices of theoretical and methodological perspective affect the content of their work.
