Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course starts with the examination of the resources available for the study of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) and the various methodologies used in this field. It then turns to the study of basic Sufi concepts, practices, institutions and its impact on the literary, social and political life of the Muslim peoples. Its main object is to develop an understanding of the mystical outlook which has marked much of the Muslim populations around the world.
The earlier lectures will introduce the Islamic doctrinal issues essential to a contextual understanding of Sufism. We will then move on to the central themes in Sufi thought and its historical developments before concluding with the discussion of the influence of Sufism on various facets of Islamic thought, culture and society and the situation of Sufism in the contemporary Islamic world and in the West.
