Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course aims to examine the role of exhibitions as the principal means of making art accessible to the general public. It is evident that they invariably pursue their own distinct political agendas. As Beatrice von Bismarck observes, the curatorial, conceived as a ‘cultural field of action and field of knowledge’, encompasses ‘the relationships that it produces and that constitute it at the same time’ (Bismarck: Das Kuratorische, Leipzig 2021). In the current discourse, this comprises the role of the curator, the mechanisms of the institution, the displays, the curatorial style, the mediation, and also the wider context, including the circumstances of lending and the requirements of financial resources. Based on relevant texts, exemplary analyses and joint discussions on site, the first part of the course aims to develop criteria for exhibition analysis and thus for an art-historical debate. In the second part, students will write three exemplary exhibition analyses, which will then be read and discussed together in the course. It is therefore essential that participants are willing to engage in the writing of their own texts, to present them for discussion and to engage in a critical reading and constructive evaluation of the texts produced by their fellow students.
Assessment and permitted materials
Exercises are courses with scheduled examinations, during which active participation is assessed through the following oral and written contributions. The course requires: participation in discussions, the submission of written work (up to 10,000 characters in total), critical reading of texts, and visits to exhibitions.
