Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
That language shapes culture is a commonplace understanding in European societies. But where does it come from and why does it appear so obvious? In this course, we will explore the historical development of the relationship between language and culture from the perspective of the European continent. We will examine different ideologies about language and how these have helped to shape European concepts of Nation and Volk, how these have travelled globally shaping colonial projects and independence movements, and how they continue to shape our everyday interactions in a heteroglossic soundscape. We will focus on the intersections between language and social categories such as “race,” “class,” “nationality,” “ethnicity,” and “gender.” We will see that ways of using and evaluating speech and writing do not only reflect social relations but also produce them. The ultimate goal of this course is to help you question widespread ideologies about language as a neutral medium, and to become more sensitive to the role of language in reflecting and producing social relationships.
