Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This class aims to study the intersection between Western(ised) visual cultures and gendered constructions with some essential concepts in cultural studies, gender studies, intersectional feminist theories, feminist film and media studies, art history, anthropology, and feminist science and technology studies. We will discuss the (re)production, representation and reception of contemporary and historical visual media from gendered perspectives. Students will learn cultural anthropological image analysis methods and apply the discussed theories for their research. We will critically discuss notions like gender binarism, male gaze, oppositional gaze, heteronormativity, masculinity, scopophilia, Ocularcentrism, the hierarchy of the senses, etc., while using visual examples such as film excerpts, photographs, paintings, etc. We will explore subjective modes of (self)representation and technologies of vision as creative strategies of seeing and knowing against the patriarchal and racist regimes. Furthermore, we will visit the sessions of "studio audio-visual research” where we learn about the works of the guests - researchers, filmmakers and artists- and discuss their work. https://studio-avr.univie.ac.at
Students are expected to make presentations by discussing the given texts, introducing works of female and queer artists, filmmakers and practitioners, and bringing empirical examples to the class.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation is crucial for the seminar. Students need to read the given texts, prepare reading notes and questions, make presentations and creatively apply the learned theories and concepts. At the end of the seminar, they will compose a written or audio-visual essay that critically and reflectively studies the theoretical perspectives discussed in the class.
Basics of video editing will be taught. No technical knowledge is required.
