Aims, contents and method of the course
The goal of the multi-volume publication project (1886-1902) instigated by Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria-Hungary was to represent the empire's territories and communities as a conglomerate unified in its diversity. This narrative was to be underlined by a shared content structure and a common aesthetic agenda. Artists from the territories covered participated in this enterprise, producing designs (often already on the basis of photographs) then converted into wood engravings. The question of what was to be represented, how, and by whom, was already a highly politicized one in this era characterized by the consolodation of nationalisms.This seminar explores this monumental publication project's illustrative practices. Students analyze individual volumes with regard to the logic underlying the choice of image motifs, artists, and iconographies.
