Aims, contents and method of the course

The facilitation of irregular migration has been primarily articulated as a violent, exploitative practice und er the control of transnational crime. The language of crisis, crime, violence and terrorism often present in migration discourses has facilitated the surveillance and control of specific geographic locations and certain groups of people. This seminar aims at reflecting the theory and praxis of irregular migration facilitation in a critical and empirically grounded manner.
Students learn to analyze and contextualize discourses about irregular migration facilitation within its social context.
Through dealing with historically and geographically diverse contexts of irregular migration, they are able to differentiate structural backgrounds and political conjuctures.

Assessment and permitted materials

Die Lehrveranstaltung ist prüfungsimmanent; kontinuierliche Anwesenheit (2x Fehlen erlaubt).
Die Punkte werden wie folgt vergeben:

Es wechseln sich kurze Vortragseinheiten, moderierte Lektüren gemeinsam zu erarbeitender akademischer soziologischer und ethnologischer Texte mit Gruppendiskussionen audiovisueller Arbeiten, Rollenspielen und der Analyse von empirischen Fallbeispielen aus
unterschiedlichen historischen und geographischen Kontexten ab.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Für den erfolgreichen Abschluss der LV sind zumindest 50 von 100 möglichen Punkten zu erreichen.
