Aims, contents and method of the course

The second semester of the project seminar builds on the summer semester 2023.

Social participation manifests itself in very different ways in cities; it is contested as a right to the city and is subject to historical change. Public libraries are the best place to study this conflict-laden change, as they react extremely dynamically to social processes with their diverse offerings.
In this research seminar, we will develop the theoretical and empirical foundations of urban studies in cultural studies in order to be able to examine the meanings and potential of libraries as public urban infrastructures.
In the first semester we used the audiovisual as a methodological entry into the examination of our urban research field.
The aim of this second semester is to deepen the field research-based case studies developed in cooperation with the Vienna Public Libraries . For this purpose, among other things, urbanize!, the festival of the Viennese urban research magazine dérive, will be used (Oct. 3-8, 2023).
Based on this, 1. the empirical research on the individual topics will be deepened, 2. these will be processed in an essay with the research literature, and a joint product will be developed and completed.

About the "Project Seminar" format:
The project seminar is designed for two semesters. Successful participation requires completion of both semesters.
A study project is a two-semester course in which a research topic is pursued and publicly presented in several coordinated sub-projects. The study project consists of two courses: M610 Project and M620 Research Workshop. In the project, the theoretical prerequisites are discussed and questions for the participants' own research are developed; in the research workshop, research and presentation methods are developed and their implementation is supervised. Successful participation requires completion of both semesters and courses.

Assessment and permitted materials

Two-semester, exam-immanent course. 2 x absences allowed per semester.

Examination topics

Research-based learning, independent research, knowledge of basic literature.

Reading list

The literature includes cultural urban research, library research, right to the city and commining research, infrastructural research. It has been collected and expanded continuously in the Moodle course since the summer semester.
