Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Studying the relationship between anthropology, photography, and cinema, the course introduces the students to the role of visual dimension in socio-anthropological sciences. During the course attention will be paid to the analysis of different ways of doing audio-visual ethnography and its implications with different fields of research, such as ethnography of senses, the so-called ‘transcultural cinema’, ‘ethnofiction’, as well as different media and tools. The course offers the students the opportunity to acquire new methodological and theoretical instruments for possible future investigation developing a diverse way of thinking the fieldwork. During the lectures, students will be encouraged to explore the audio-visual dimension of their own research and the potentialities of different digital tools such as smartphones, DSLR cameras, action cameras, and so forth. Finally, the visual ethnographic documentation produced, will be presented and discussed all together in a dynamic way.
N.B: No previous knowledge is required. Cameras and some other digital tools will be provided in class.
