Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will be using Giovan Pietro Bellori's (16131696) seminal work of biography and art criticism the Vite de' pittori scultori et architetti moderni (1672) as a lens through which to study the most celebrated artists of seventeenth century Rome: Annibale Carracci, Caravaggio, Guido Reni, Nicolas Poussin and Carlo Maratti, among others. Students will become familiar with the foremost work of artistic literature in the seventeenth century, the Seicento and Roman counterpart to Giorgio Vasari's 1550's Vite, which revolved predominantly around Tuscan artists.
The course will examine the various artistic currents that dominated the Roman cultural scene in the Seicento. It will explore the opposition between the Classical style of Annibale Carracci and the realist one of Caravaggio and how both emerged after a period of great upheaval in the artistic panorama with the advent of Mannerism. For the second half of the seventeenth century, the course will concentrate on the Classicist schools led by Pietro da Cortona and Carlo Maratti and the different tensions that arose between them. Bellori's work is certainly not balanced or comprehensive and precisely this conscious selection and manipulation of artistic narratives will be a key element explored in the course. The complex network of artists, patrons and intellectuals involved in the creation of the Vite will also be placed at the forefront. Special attention will be paid to the Accademia di San Luca as an important platform in which Classicist ideas could be discussed and disseminated. "L'Idea del bello" is ideal for those interested in the relationship between word and image. The course will also touch on topics such as the reception and re-elaboration of works as well as questions of legacy and historical manipulation.

The course will feature several outings to Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum. There, the class will go through the Italian Baroque rooms and students will have an opportunity to present a work of art. We will also go to the study room of the Albertina which holds numerous drawings by Carracci and his school as well as other leading artists in Rome at the time. Unless notified by instructor, students will be required to purchase their own museum tickets.

Assessment and permitted materials

In addition to regular attendance and participation, as well as presentations at the KHM or Albertina, students will be expected to draft weekly responses to a passage from Bellori's Vite or an artwork described by the biographer. Furthermore, students will be required to draft a final paper (ca. 2000 words). The course will be taught in English. Knowledge of Italian is encouraged but not required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grading Scale: 20% Active Participation in Class Discussions, 25 % Weekly Responses, 20% Presentations, 35% Final Paper.

In case of absence due to illness or exceptional family situation, written justification (e.g. physician’s note) must be submitted to the instructor.
