Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The excursion will take us to the distant 'Rhineland'; the first (recommended) main location is Cologne, from where we will make detours to the surrounding cities (Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach, Krefeld, possibly Duisburg, possibly Bonn...). The focus will be on current exhibitions and the excellent collections of modern and contemporary art (Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Museum am Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach; K20 and K21 Düsseldorf; Städel, Frankfurt). There will also be a focus on important museum buildings (Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Cologne, Rudolf Schwarz; Museum am Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, Hans Hollein; Haus Lange and Haus Ester, Krefeld, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, if possible (no exhibition) MMK Frankfurt, Hans Hollein; Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt, Richard Meier), on university architecture in Frankfurt and Cologne and on urbanistic constellations in the cities that were severely destroyed in the Second World War. - The focus of the excursion will be on joint descriptive and reflective work. One of the main aims is to sharpen our eyes and develop tools for analyzing modern and contemporary art and architecture.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be various subtasks such as handouts on architecture and urbanism, preparation for joint advertising considerations plus written reflection in the form of a short blog text during the excursion. An overview will be presented at the first VB (29.8.).
