Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to train the basic skills of scientific research, especially working with visual and textual sources as well as secondary literature. Students will improve their skills in formulating their own ideas, describing images, iconographic interpretation, citing literature, and preparing a written paper. In addition, they will deepen their knowledge of medieval iconography as well as their specialized knowledge of the techniques of typological interpretation of illuminations based on theological concepts of salvation history.
During the course, students will produce a written interpretation of a selected New Testament scene and its Old Testament antecedents based on illuminated Bibles (bible moraliseé, Armenbibel), manuscripts of the Concordantiae caritatis, and other appropriate sources. In written work, they will compare textual sources with their visual interpretation in individual manuscripts, citing both primary sources and secondary literature.
