Aims, contents and method of the course

The minaret is a principal structural component of a mosque. Intertwined in different narratives the minaret was not a standard feature until the Abbasid Period (750-1258).
This course explores the history and architectural development of the minaret, its origins, functions, and symbolism. It offers insight into selected visual and conceptual themes related to the topic and discusses questions related to the introduction of the structure and its connection to the mosque. The students will be introduced to decorative and structural vocabularies encompassing monuments from Spain to India, in addition to getting acquainted with terms related to the study of Islamic architecture.
The methodological aim of this case study is to enhance the student's ability to use combined approaches to research, obtain evidence from a variety of sources, and analytically review the literature on the subject.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in class discussions, activities, and reading assignments: 15%
Two to three presentations on the student’s work in progress (5-10 minutes): 30 %
Final Paper (15,000-20,000 characters): 55%
