In the 1980s at the latest, the Viennese Fin de Siècle receives great international attention: first through the collected publication of Carl Schorske's research on Vienna around 1900 as an overall cultural phenomenon, but much more broadly through several blockbuster exhibitions in e.g. Venice, Vienna and Paris. The topos of "Vienna around 1900" was recognised for its cultural-political potential for the city of Vienna through the enormous success of the exhibitions and became the touristic figurehead as which we know it all too well today.
Without ignoring this history of reception, in this proseminar we want to find our own access to painting around 1900 in Vienna, especially that of the Ringstrasse period and that of the Secession, through intensive observations of works. We will link our precise observations with questions about the political, socio-historical and institutional context, which we will discuss on the basis of selected, both canonical and current examples from the secondary literature.Study goals according to the curriculum:
Through intensive examination of an art-historical topic, the students have expanded and consolidated the previously acquired specialist knowledge, working techniques and intellectual skills. They are able to independently gain an overview of the relevant specialist literature and to critically receive it. They have begun to contribute to the art historical research process orally and in writing.
