Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Principally Featuring: The Old Masters (Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque)
Principal Arenas: Kunsthistorisches Museum (Fine Arts Museum), Liechtenstein Museum, Gemäldegalerie der Akademie am Schillerplatz (The Academy's Picture Gallery at Schillerplatz).

Assessment and permitted materials

The evaluation of participants' independent analyses of pictures and their presentation in the museum environment will consider not only academic competence but equally the precision with which rhetorical skills (such as choice of language, expression, gesture and deportment) are applied. Active involvement in the discussions accompanying presentations of individual pictures is encouraged.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of the course is to foster participants' academic-analytical, rhetorical and people-orientated skills as Mediators of Art, whether for an educational or similar professional context.
As would-be Mediators of Art, participants are challenged to draw up consequential and convincing appreciations of pictures and present them before an audience in a museum environment.
The guiding principle of museum pedagogy is balance between the claims of the collection and the wants of visitors: being at once the voice of the objects whose meaning is to be brought to light as well as the 'ally of the public' who ushers visitors towards a personal encounter with an exhibit.

Examination topics

Identification of the structures of narrative technique, stylistic and iconographic analysis rooted in sound art-historical and historical competence. Composition of a guided museum visit with attention to its engaging presentation, followed by its realisation in practice.
