Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Queer art includes works that deal with queer life, gender, sexuality, physicality, visibility, identity, politics, violence, marginalisation and strategies for overcoming (hetero-)normative differences and power relations that structure our societies. ‘Queer’ is also theorised in a similarly broad and system-busting way; "Queer Theory", writes Mike Laufenberg, for example, "thinks identity [...] as an effect of domination" and at the same time "as a field of action for resistant practices of appropriation, change and ‘dis-identification". In the seminar, art works focussing on performance, photography, video, conceptual art and painting (including Andy Warhol, Anna Daucíková, Henrik Olesen, Zanele Muholi, Félix González-Torres, Pauline Boudry / Renate Lorenz) as well as relevant theories (including Monique Wittig, Michel Foucault, José Esteban Muñoz) will be discussed with regard to the question of how ‘queer’ is negotiated and made visible in art. The aim is to provide an in-depth insight into and overview of a field that is one of the central discourses and thematic areas of contemporary art.
