Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The Global South is one of the most significant themes in contemporary art, as evidenced by the major Western exhibitions of recent years, from documenta fifteen (2022) to the 60th Venice Biennale (2024). It is notable that the Global South is represented in a multitude of ways. It is seen as an artistic theme, a curatorial practice, a place of origin for artists, a cause of diaspora and migration, a geopolitical player indicating global inequalities, a corrective to the Global North, a mode of criticism, a form of resistance, a method, or a 'state of mind'. Based on selected artworks (e.g. by Coco Fusco, Teresa Margolles, El Anatsui, Bouchra Khalili, Anna Ehrenstein), exhibitions (e.g. The Other Story, Magiciens de la Terre, documenta 11, Global(e) Resistance, Revolutionary Romances), theories and art histories (e.g. Frantz Fanon, Gayatri Spivak, Okwui Enwezor), the seminar will examine and critically discuss the various formats and perspectives in their breadth from the 1990s to the present.
