Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This proseminar investigates the development of an indispensable furnishing for any late medieval church in Central Europe: the characteristic winged retables with their extensive programmes of sculpture and painting, which stood - often in large numbers - on the high and side altars of most churches. The initial focus is on the origins of the form and early examples from northern Germany in the fourteenth century, before attention shifts to southern Germany and Austria, where the development can be seen to reach a climax towards the end of the fifteenth century. Particular attention will be given to examples that remain in their original architectural context, allowing the altarpieces to be addressed not as isolated works of painting or sculpture, but rather as objects forming part of larger multi-media ensembles that grew up around the altar in question.

Assessment and permitted materials

Performance will be assessed on the basis of the presentations, contributions made to discussions, and the written work resulting from these (c. 4000 words, including footnotes, plus max. 20 illustrations).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Investigation of a central cultural phenomenon of the later Middle Ages
- Improved knowledge of late medieval religious art
- Improved knowledge of late medieval church planning and liturgy

Examination topics

The proseminar is based on seminars at the Institute for Art History with some visits to relevant monuments. Participants will give presentations (maximum 30 mins) on specific examples, following which there will be a discussion. Presentations in English are welcome.
