Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this excursion is to study the production and reception of contemporary art and culture in Serbia through a prism that considers the historical and art historical legacy of the former Yugoslavia, the project of nation building in the post Balkan Wars context, and the acceleration of neoliberal global capitalism.

One of our central questions will be how to write the history of contemporary art in such a contradictory and multivalent space while taking into account our own particular positionality as art historians.

Our primary methodology will be critical conversations and the frequent group debriefings. We will meet with various protagonists in the local artistic / cultural context, visit museums, galleries, and collections and have exchanges with non-governmental organizations.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance in all meetings and for the entire excursion is mandatory.
All participants will work in teams to conduct a critical conversation with a protagonist in the local artistic / cultural context.
All participants will write a short essay of approx 5 pages at the conclusion of the excursion.
Vigorous participation is expected throughout the entire trip.
