080026 PS Case Study I: Paul Cézanne and the Destruction of the European Painting Tradition (2017S)
Continuous assessment of course work

In the seminar we will train the precise description and analysis of paintings. Based on exercises done in the group the participants produce short descriptive texts that will be discussed in the seminar. Together we will develop criteria and models of good - i.e. precise, complete, and plausibly organized - descriptions. Thematically the seminar focusses mainly on Cézanne's later work. Outlooks at the European tradition of painting and comparisons with positions from the 20th century serve to highlight Cézanne's very particular use of color to produce a pictorial space. Accompanying literature will mainly consist of examples of descriptions and of analytical examinations of Cézanne's color-space in its broader historical context.
