Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course examines the historical evolution of Ottoman book painting from the 15th century to the 18th century. The various artworks and themes will be addressed chronologically in order to highlight important transformations in the production of Ottoman book painting. The course covers material starting with Sultan Mehmet II’s reign and ending with the illustrated Surname (Book of the Festival) by Vehbi, made at the beginning of the 18th century. A number of genres in Ottoman book painting are introduced: portraits of sultans and genealogy, illustrated chronicles, paintings in poetic and epic works as well as cartography and topographical painting. The aim is to present the variety of themes offered by Ottoman book painting.

The main aims of the course are:
-to impart the basic principles of academic research
-to practise presenting one’s research coherently
-to foster critical reading of scholarly literature

Describing, analysing and interpreting art works will be practised with the help of short assignments, a presentation and a final paper. By reading and discussing texts together, the class will train critical thinking. At the same time, the course will familiarise students with the basic terminology, forms and iconography of book painting in Ottoman manuscripts, as well as the principles of academic research.
