Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

How does the successive expansion of the field of art history, combined with canon critiques and the emergence of new canons, as well as the current numerous interdisciplinary research approaches in art history affect the field of research on Viennese Modernism? Using case studies, we want to use this methodological exercise to ask and test the extent to which we can use current research perspectives to make long-established artistic positions productive again and open up little-known or previously overlooked research material.
The challenge should be twofold: On the one hand, we want to acquire knowledge about art and architecture in Vienna from historicism to the Secession to the post-war period and postmodernism. On the other hand, we want to gain an insight into the current diversity of methods in the field and discuss the approaches proposed by the participants on a wide range of works from Hans Makart to VALIE EXPORT.
This examination of Viennese Modernism is to take place on site in the museums as well as in the urban space, which is why the course is divided into four extensive excursion units (May-June), preceded by a preliminary discussion (March).
Participants will prepare, present and discuss oral contributions in individual or group work. An individually prepared written contribution (1-2 pages) in the form of a methodically well-reflected proposal for a (fictional) text is to be submitted at the end of the semester.
Personal initiative, self-organization, willingness to read and discuss on the part of the participants are essential for the success of the course.

Costs for museum admission: We endeavor to ensure that admission to the museums is as free as possible, but unfortunately a cost of 25-30 euros is still to be expected.
