Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This exercise is a basic introduction into the Buddhist art of South and Central Asia. By means of selected topics of Indian, Indo-Tibetan and Tibetan Buddhist monuments students will get familiar with Buddhist art. The attendance of the lecture "The Art of South and Central Asia" by Dr. Anna Filigenzi is not a requirement but additionally recommended.

Assessment and permitted materials

regular attendance, active participation at discussions, one presentation of a selected topic of 15-20 minutes as well as a 3-5 pages long written summary. small written exam at the end of the term.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

preparation for further and deepening study of Asian art history.

Examination topics

After an introduction into Buddhist iconography and the most important epochs and schools of Buddhist art, exemplary topics of Buddhist monuments will be analysed as students' presentations.

Reading list

Da ein Großteil der Literatur aus dem Englischen stammt, werden zumindest passive Englischkenntnisse vorausgesetzt. Am Anfang des Semesters wird ein Handapparat in der Bibliothek des Instituts aufgestellt. Für einen ersten Überblick empfiehlt sich die Lektüre von:
