Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The development of the medieval book illumination was created by the transition from the papyrus scroll to the parchment codex between the 2nd and 4th century AD. This change in media initiated new forms of illustration, as a fixed framework for miniatures and book decorations was now available. The medieval book illustration in Western Latin Europe was subject to permanent changes in style, tied to formal components as well with regards to content and was subject to aesthetic and functional directions, which were caused by various requirements. In this case study the change of various types of illustration from their early beginning to gothic book illumination will be examined by different examples.
