Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Modernity's "crisis of narrative" not only affected the Fine Arts but mainly the one time noblest of its genres - history painting, which had told stories and depicted history for centuries past. The aim of the course is to analyse the different means and strategies by which, nevertheless, Modern and Contemporary Art managed to keep its hold on the past.

Assessment and permitted materials

regular attendance and participation, oral presentation (15 minutes), paper (12-15 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at conducing the student's competence in reading theoretical texts, analysing works of art and writing essays on art history.

Examination topics

Each participant must prepare an oral presentation on a chosen topic and write a well researched and argued paper.

Reading list

- Hayden White, The Content of the Form. Narrative Discourse and Historical Representation, Baltimore 1987
- Fredric Jameson, Postmodernism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, Duke University Press 1991.
