Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course addresses some of the most important medieval towns, churches, and artefacts from the rich heritage of Austria's southern regions, Styria and Carinthia. On the one hand, a series of first-rate art works and their original contexts will be examined in situ. On the other, the question of specific regional developments will be explored: while the two territories had much in common because of their geographical proximity and early absorption into the growing Habsburg empire, fundamental differences remain evident. On this basis, a more profound understanding should be reached of two fascinating but relatively neglected art-historical landscapes.

Assessment and permitted materials
