Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Description, analysis and interpretation of selected works by Maria Lassnig and her concept of "body-awareness painting". Critical encounter with phenomenological interpretations of her art (Armin Wildermuth, Gottfried Boehm).

Assessment and permitted materials

Discussions, oral presentation and (first of all) paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

We shall read theoretical texts, describe, analyse and interpret works of art (in this case, paintings by Maria Lassnig) and develop art historical arguments. The students will also be introduced into some basic techniques of research (bibliographies...), presentation (giving talks...) and text-organisation (footnotes...). Each participant will give an oral presentation and submit a paper on the chosen subject (ca. 12 pages, including footnotes).

Examination topics

Among other thinggs: critical encounter with phenomenological interpretations of Lassnig's art (Armin Wildermuth, Gottfried Boehm).

Reading list

While some important titles will be indicated at the beginning of the course, most of the literature will be researched by the students themselves.
