Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Dealing with the theme of transience has preoccupied art for many centuries. However, the focus of the seminar will be less on the present, but rather on the Middle Ages and the early modern period, exploring various forms of these images of death. The vanitas theme will not only be explored in terms of motifs and subjects, but also with regard to the question of how the abstract object can be represented phenomenologically, allegorically or in its performative dimension. Special consideration will also be given to theological and philosophical theories, which are central to a comprehensive examination of this topic.

- Active participation in the discussions
- Reading the compulsory reading and viewing the presentations in preparation for the individual seminar dates.
- Presentation (to be uploaded as a video presentation in advance of the respective session)
- In-depth study in the form of a written paper (approx. 40,000 characters of continuous text)
- By registering for this course, you agree that the automated plagiarism checking software Turnitin will check all written submissions made by you in moodle
- Reading the compulsory reading and viewing the presentations in preparation for the individual seminar dates.

- Compulsory attendance. In case of absence due to illness or exceptional family situation, written proof must be submitted.
- For a positive completion of the course, all partial assessments must be achieved.
- Seminar paper: To ensure good academic practice, the course instructor may invite students to a grade-relevant interview after submission of the paper, which must be completed positively.Assessment standard:
- active participation in discussions 15%
- oral presentation 30%
- In-depth study in the form of a written paper 55%.Grading scale:
1 (very good) 100-90 points; 2 (good) 89-81 points; 3 (satisfactory) 80-71 points; 4 (sufficient) 70-61 points; 5 (insufficient) 60-0 points.
