Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to identify and distinguish the basic printmaking techniques from the 15th to the 19th century. Rare techniques like aquatint and mezzotint will be explained in detail using selected original works from the Graphics Department of the Austrian National Library. Original copper plates, lithographic stones and wood blocks should raise the students awareness of the process of printmaking.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance and active participation in the discussions, oral presentation (ca. 25 min.) and written paper (ca. 20.000 characters).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge of the principal methods of printmaking is the basis for a critical approach to the essential works and series of printmaking from the 15th to the 19th century that will be selected for stylistic and iconographical analysis to be reported in both written and oral presentations.
