Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The primary goal of this class is to study a selection of furnishings in churches und palaces in the Vienna area. The first unit of the session will provide an introduction to the technical basics essential for the understanding of the appearance of the baroque furniture. Another indispensable part of the introduction will have to look at ecclesiastical synods, RC rites, courtly apartments and baroque ceremonials, all of which of overarching significance for the development of this kind of furniture.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students are expected either to prepare a talk or to write a paper and to participate actively in the discussions during the sessions.

Examination topics

The introduction will be at the department on the campus, some following sessions however, will be held extramurally in a number of Viennese churches and palaces as well as in the abbey of Klosterneuburg. In addition a Saturday-excursion to Schloss Hof will be part of the programme.
