Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This class will encourage research on Neu Wien, a neighborhood just outside the city center, situated in the former Glacis area , a property with construction ban right outside the fortifications. Since around 1800, single building activities were allowed, and Neu Wien became to be the first major development on the Glacis area, an important forerunner of Vienna s huge urban sprawl of 1857. Students are going to investigate the Neu Wien area by visits to the buildings, archival research using the archives if the building authorities and by the use of literature. Information obtained will be communicated by short presentations in class.
During the research process, information obtained will undergo a discussion process that aims at the enhancement of structurizing data for database input. Fundamental knowledge of printed and digital architectural databases will lead to independent conception of data sheets for creating an inventory of the Neu Wien area. The structure of the data sheets will be elaborated in group discussion. This will be followed by data input using an existing and freely accessible database. Students will research 1-2 objects from the working area, present their results in short presentations and produce data sheets. Several excursions will amplify knowledge of 19th century architecture as well as improve the use of architectural terminology.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment will be based on personal contribution in class, the quality of the short presentation, and the quality of the data sheets. Presence and activity during all units is strongly required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students are supposed to acquire skills for analyzing and structurizing information collected during the semester while researching the Neu-Wien area. The obtained data will go into a database structured by the workgroup as a result of a group discussion process . The outcome of this process should enable students to collect, select and arrange information for database input in general.

Examination topics

The chosen method is discourse analysis. Discourse is understood as an element that creates and structurizes reality. After researching the working field and the related sources and literature, form, boudaries and acting persons oft he discourse will be identified and tested for practicabilty als elements of arraying the material along a datasheet structure. Active partipation in the discussion process is required.
