Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The relation of video art to its support has defined this medium from its beginnings, as is evident by Nam June Paik¿s early works. Monitors as sculptures, projections as (part of) installations, the spatial staging of video art, as well as the spatial concept of this art form shall be the main subjects of this lecture. Contact: Moritz Neumüller <moritz.neumueller@univie.ac.at>
Assessment and permitted materials
The evaluation of the students will be based on their participation (in form of talks and comments in class).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim the this lecture is an approximation to the spatial and sculptural aspects of video art.
Examination topics
The various possibilities of coping with the spatial issue will be traced by looking at selected examples. The educative method consists in an initial lecture on the theoretical aspects and group work as well as student talks on the selected artists, such as Nam June Paik, Wolf Vostell, Vito Acconci, Gary Hill, Tony Oursler, Fischli/Weiss and Pipilotti Rist. The lecture will count with an excursion to an exhibition and/or artist studio, also.
