Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this case study we will explore the art and architecture of mendicant orders in Italy. In particular, we will examine late-medieval buildings and pictorial programs of Franciscan and Dominican orders and explore the question of whether there were specific forms or issues that characterize the art and architecture of these orders. With the help of this topic we will both practice approaches to studying buildings, pictorial programs or furnishings (e.g. pulpits, altarpieces) as well as discuss how these elements work together. In addition, we will consider the effect these elements most likely had in the urban environment, in which the orders usually resided.
