    Aims, contents and method of the course

    This course focuses on various aspects of maps, models, drawings, and paintings in the Islamic world, including their production, pictorial techniques, functions, meanings, and afterlives. It studies cartographic and architectural representations as integral parts of books and as individual objects that serve utilitarian and ideological purposes. The course aims to equip students with skills to examine different types of representations from different periods and regions across the Islamic world and to introduce them to methods and theories relevant to the topic. It also intends to consolidate students’ critical thinking and writing.

    Assessment and permitted materials

    - Reading assigned publications and writing a question and an answer for each reading.
    - Active participation in discussions and joining a visit to the Austrian National Library.
    - Presentation of the term paper.
    - In-depth research of a topic in the form of a written term paper (3,000–3,500 words).
    - By registering for this course, you agree that Turnitin (plagiarism detection software) will automatically check all written assignments submitted in Moodle to ensure the originality of your works.
    - By registering for this course, you also agree that you will not use generative Artificial Intelligence tools in your presentations and written assignments in ways that will replace your original act of reading publications, preparing slides, and putting down thoughts into words.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    Minimum requirement:
    - Attendance is compulsory. In the event of absence due to illness or exceptional family circumstances, written proof must be provided.
    - Taking part in each performance assessment is required to successfully complete the course.
    - To ensure good academic practice, the course instructor might invite students for a grade-relevant discussion of their term paper which needs to be completed positively.

    Assessment criteria:
    Participation in discussions, the visit to the Austrian National Library, and submission of a question and an answer for each reading: 20 %
    Presentation: 25 %
    Term Paper: 55 %
    All three assessments make up the examination material.

    Grading:
    1 (very good) 100-90 points
    2 (good) 89-81 points
    3 (satisfactory) 80-71 points
    4 (sufficient) 70-61 points
    5 (unsatisfactory) 60-0 points
