Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The participants learn to analyze and describe pictures not only in their thematic and iconographic, but in their formal and structural aspects. With cubist works this is especially difficult and necessary since we often cannot precisely identify the represented objects; the pictures are, however, also not abstract (or non-objective). The thematic and the formal or structural aspect of a description have thus to be closely intertwined. The participants write short descriptive that we read and discuss together. We try as well to establish criteria and templates of good – precise, complete and well-ordered – descriptions. The Seminar focusses on cubist paintings, collages, papiers collés mainly by Picasso and Braque. To gain a better understanding of the break cubism represents within the history of European painting we look back at this tradition under some systematic aspects (the role of linear perspective, the function of chiaroscuro, the relation of representation and facture).
Methodically the Seminar tries to convey basic principles of scientific work: accurate observation, linguistic precision, self-reflection of the own procedures, harmonization of the verbal (grammatical), logical and factual dimensions of the oral and written statements.

Assessment and permitted materials

The participant write short, primarily descriptive texts (8-10.000 signs). The final seminar paper (15-20.000 signs) is an analysis of another cubist painting/work (or a comparison of two works); this paper should include a basic placement or assessment of the discussed work/s with regard to the history of painting.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Precise, at most complete, terminologically correct, plausibly ordered and linguistically accurate description of a painting.

Examination topics

Precise, at most complete, terminologically correct, plausibly ordered and linguistically accurate description of a painting.

Reading list

Selected literature and important catalogues will be provided via Moodle and a 'Seminarapparat' in the library.
