Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Description, analysis and interpretation of seleceted works by Hennri Matisse. Critical encounter with art historical methodologies such as formalism, hermeneutics and (post-)structuralism.

Assessment and permitted materials

Discussions, oral presentation, paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

We shall read theoretical texts, describe, analyse and interpret works of art (in this case, paintings by Henri Matisse) and develop art historical arguments. The students will also be introduced into some basic techniques of research (bibliographies...), presentation (giving talks...) and text-organisation (footnotes...). Each participant will give an oral presentation and submit a paper on the chosen subject (ca. 12 pages, including footnotes).
