Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

As bishops’ seats and prominent venues for courtly and civic representation, the cathedrals formed multifacetted centres of medieval sacred life and belonged to the most elaborate architectural genres of their time. Based on a series of case studies that range from Cologne to Kraków, this course traces the development of the Central European cathedral complex in the High and Late Gothic. On the one hand, it aims to examine the wide-ranging functions and visual media of each site – from the architectural framework and its integral art forms (sculpture, mural painting) to smaller and/or mobile furnishings. On the other, it develops comparative perspectives that cast light on the characteristic interplay of super-regional similarities and site-specific phenomena.
