080039 SE Seminar: Édouard Manet (2016S)

Continuous assessment of course work

Introduction into the Oeuvre of Édourd Manet with focus on the notion of its infamous "modernity". The seminar will be based mainly on the books of T. J. Clark (The Painting of Modern Life, rev. edition, London 1999 (1984)) and Michael Fried (Manet's Modernism or, The Face of Painting in the 1860s, Chicago 1996); we will further read some source texts concerning the issue of "modernity" in the 19. century as well as Carol Armstrongs discussion of gender in Manets paintings in her "Manet/Manette" (New Haven / London 2002).
