080039 SE Seminar: Body, Language and Temporality in Bruce Nauman (2017S)

Continuous assessment of course work

Since the mid 1960's Bruce Nauman has developed a formally and medially heterogeneous, thematically rich but coherent work. Surprisingly, during the course of this long career he dropped never out of the focus of attention of the contemporary art public. A retrospective in Basel and New York in 2018 will make accessible his work on a broader scale. In the seminar we will explore and discuss this heterogeneous output proceeding from some videos or films (or, perhaps, performances) and from text-based works over primary sources like interviews to photographic documents and art historical literature. The methodological implications of this "mediation" of our access to the work - originals will be scarcely available - will be expressly reflected. The analyses of Nauman's work will follow different leading aspects. Those named in the seminar title - language, body and temporality - give only a first orientation. After the introductory seminar meetings the participants will develop in groups of three people their own questions and emphases which will be presented and discussed in the seminar. Two or three meetings reserved to shared readings will focus on excerpts of texts that are central for the questions of the participants.
