Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The Seminar focuses on some artistic positions from the late 1960s to the present. In different ways these practices investigate or explore the historicity of media, or dispositifs of representation (painting and sculpture, photography and film, the museum, and, more generally, the “art system”). These are, thus, media-reflective practices in the modernist sense; they proceed, however, from a radically expanded concept of what a medium is. We look presumably at works of Marcel Broodthaers, of Christopher Williams, Stephen Prina, Heimo Zobernig, Andrea Fraser, Walid Raad, Walead Beshty, Sam Lewitt, Florian Pumhösl and Dorit Margreiter. A guiding question of the Seminar is how these practices articulate the relation of the materiality and the signifying function of the aesthetic signifier. The relation of language and writing (symbol), image (icon) and trace (index) will help to orient our investigation of this question.
Assessment and permitted materials
Referat/oral contribution (eventually prepared in group) and written seminar paper (c. 35-45.000 signs incl. blancs and footnotes, excl. appendices).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Independent induction into the subject of the seminar; participation in the discussions during the seminar; preparation of the literature for all of the seminar meetings. - For the Seminar papers: Development of a coherent question and concise definitions of the paper’s subject; factually precise and terminologically correct analyses/description of the work(s) and accurate references to relevant literature; linguistically flawless form of expression/representation. - Since the literature is mainly in english, very good reading ability is required; as well as the readiness to cooperate in (small) groups also beyond the seminar times.
Examination topics
The works, texts and historical interrelations covered in the seminar.
Reading list
Will be supplied via moodle and a semesterapparat at the library.
