Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar focuses on the development of a detailed concept for an art-historical and historico-cultural exhibition (Middle Ages to Classical Modern) in a given local context. Students are required to pick a theme and establish a narrative guideline, which is then broken down into subchapters and assigned to the spatial conditions. In doing so, the manner by which information is conveyed and the criteria for the selection and presentation of exhibits have to be considered. The detailed exhibition concept should, therefore, include descriptions about object arrangements, the use of graphics and media as well as suggested text hierarchies, supplemented by sample texts.
Regarding the location, the rooms for special exhibitions on the ground floor of the Wien Museum act as a theoretical reference.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade consists of the evaluation of the presentation (weighting of 40 %) and the written paper (weighting of 60 %). In order to pass the seminar, both sections must receive a positive assessment.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Through the individual development and elaboration of an exhibition concept based on scientific research, students will gain practical insight into the methods of conceptual curatorial work.

Examination topics

In the course of two introductory lessons, the foundations and approaches of curatorial concept work are taught using practical examples. The exhibition themes proposed by the students are eventually developed in groups of two and presented at three blocked dates. Based on the presentation and reflection of the discussion results, a written assignment in form of a concept paper is compiled by the participants. The course is accompanied by a tutor.
