Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is an introductory course on the history and theory of painting after Modernism with an emphasis on visual analyses of singular works and close readings of theoretical texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Over the course of the term you are going to develop and deepen academic practices of art historical research. You are expected to apply relevant research and writing skills in your final research paper. Your paper should include at least one visual analysis that demonstrates a high level of analytical accuracy and precision in terminology; furthermore, it should feature concise (critical) readings of primary sources/secondary literature, and formally correct footnotes/appendix. The paper must be coherent and cohesive, with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If your native language is not German, please make sure that your paper is proof-read beforehand. Details will be discussed at the initial session.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grades depend on your performance during the term (oral presentations, active participation in class discussions, careful preparation of the assigned readings, home assignments) and the quality of your final research paper, which is due at the end of the term. In order to pass the course, your score on the final paper must be 60% or higher.

Examination topics

No exam.
