Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:
Building culture is understood as the sum of action, organization, mediality, and reaction of social interactions with the aim of architecturally shaping the environment.
The seminar focuses on the buildings attributed by research to Emperor Frederick III (1415-1493) as well as their furnishings and asks about their meaning and function. Another aspect is devoted to the actors involved in the building process.
The study will include all types of sources, such as building components, building structures, sketches, plans, written sources, pictorial and cult objects. The seminar is connected with the international and interdisciplinary network "Northern Alpine Building Culture of the Late Middle Ages", which aims, among other things, to promote young researchers. Currently, there are too few young scholars in this object- and source-rich research field of the Late Middle Ages.
Objective:
The course aims to consolidate and deepen scholarly work. This includes, among other things, reflection on the research literature, development of a research question, and engagement with methods of the historical and art and architectural history disciplines.

Methods:
Historical-critical, art-historical (style analysis, iconography) and building-historical (building and spatial analysis) methods are applied.
