Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

What is art criticism? What different approaches are there? How did it develop through the centuries? What are its ethical concerns? What role do description and evaluation play for it? What role does it play for art and artists? What is its relationship to the market?
This seminar in method will approach art criticism theoretically and practically. Beyond historical and conceptual reflections, the students' will get to experiment with writing art criticism. We will thus go to see exhibitions together as well. Reading texts, we'll try to understand how writers define themselves, what are their aims and implicit presuppositions. We will also compare the written texts and the works that they are about. The teacher will also share his insights a member of AICA (the international association of art critics) and a writer for Spike, Parnass, Art Newspaper, Artpress, FAZ.
The seminar will mostly be in German. However, many of the texts we discuss are published in French or English (for those in French, we’ll use the translations) and presentations may also be given in English. Texts may be written in German, English or French.
